Sergei Stroitelev's statement
The Baltic Spit is a strip of land cut off from the mainland by a shipping canal and divided between Poland and the Russian Kaliningrad region. There is no communication between the two parts of the Spit. In the Polish part a popular seaside resort is located; Russian part was an active military point after the WWII. However the Soviet Union collapsed and the ex — Luftwaffe airport which was giving job places to thousand of people was closed. Now men are engaged in fishing or illegal collecting amber, for women, the local labor market can offer only the cashier’s place in the village shop. Young people are trying to leave this place in order to study or to work whereas old-timers who have evidenced better times of this place are still wondering what has happened to the land.
